Home Solutions for Lightening Stretch Marks

by Jen Hopkins

One of the worst scars that can form on your skin is stretch marks. These marks look like thin lines that run parallel with each other on the skin. At first, these would appear red or violet in color as the wounds underneath are still fresh. When this has healed, a scar will form and the color may become slightly brown.

Stretch marks or striae are formed when the skin is forced to stretch beyond its limit during times when the body grows too fast for it to accommodate. The dermal layer of the skin tears which results in blood being seen on the surface of the skin due to ruptured blood vessels. This gives it the purplish or reddish appearance. Once this heals, it will become lighter in color but will not totally disappear.

You may wonder why these wounds leave a scar upon healing. Almost all unintentional wounds on the body will leave a scar as these wounds are often irregular edges which make it harder for the body to repair. Clean wounds such as surgical incisions on the other hand, are much easier to repair and will usually not leave a scar. Since tearing of the skin is irregular, this causes permanents scars to be seen on the skin.

There are different ways as to how to get rid of scars that are starting to form on the skin. Some people would try massaging the affected area when they feel that a scar is about to form. They believe that massaging will help break down scar tissue so that the body is able to better repair the wound and less scars will form.

Aside form massaging the affected areas, some people will use creams such as cocoa butter to help moisturize the skin and lighten the appearance of the marks. The use of scar removal creams may also help in lightening the appearance of scars.

Other supplemental treatment options that you can try are application of Vitamin A, C and E on the affected area. These vitamins are important for the skin to regenerate and in fixing wounds. By supplementing your skin with these vitamins, these may help stimulate better healing and lessen the chances that scars will form. In addition to topical application, you may also take in these vitamins orally to have an added effect.

If you do not want these simple methods of scar removal, you still have the option of undergoing surgery, laser treatments or microdermabrasion to get rid of these blemishes on your skin. These methods may be more effective in removing scars but they will also cost you a lot of money.

Stretch marks are really very annoying to see especially of they formed on areas of your body that can be easily seen. There is really very little you can do on your own to remove these marks permanently. You can only lighten their appearance and wish that they become almost invisible. The best way to totally eliminate them is by undergoing expensive treatments like the ones mentioned above.
